WE ARE A SELLOUT!!!!!!!!!!

For everyone who has participated in the GLW/Operation TBD event to get books to the students on the Navajo Nation and White Mountain Apache Reservation, please know that we have sold out! Through your support, 772 books were bought for Ojo Encino Day School & Alchesay High. I can not begin to thank you. I will talk to both schools on Monday and report back with their thoughts. This is amazing!!

Behind the cut, see the schools' initial response and what many folks have sent.

Last week, I spoke with Mary Nickless, librarian at Ojo Encino and Marilyn Hill, reading specialist at Alchesay. Both schools have received about 100 books thus far and are fairly gobsmacked that this is just the beginning. At Ojo, Mary is planning a party for May 3rd when the children will be presented with the piles and piles of new titles. Marilyn, whose students are much older, has been opening boxes with the students as they arrive. Last night she was preparing a power point presentation for the parents so they could understand what was happening. No one expected so many books, not one of them thought so many people could be so generous to children they never met and would likely never know. It just all seemed too good to be true.

How awesome is it that you could prove them wrong in such a lovely way.

The book fair is winding down this week and if anyone still would like to make a purchase, I certainly hope you will. We've added an extra note to the main post with all the ordering instructions - some folks are having trouble with orders for Alchesay of books already purchased for Ojo Encino. Please feel free to purchase any books that appear as unsold on the lists - just let us know in an email or comment if you have any concerns about the lists being updated and I'll make sure everything is fine. (I've contacted Powells and they are working on this.)

For everyone who has bought books, or tweeted or blogged, please know that we here at Guys Lit Wire thank you from the bottom of our hearts. This whole site is a labor of love for all of us; an attempt to bring good books to the attention of readers in general and teenage boys in particular. We have been committed to making the world a better place through books and reading from the beginning and will continue in the future to host events like this one so that change can happen for more kids, in more places across the country.

This is an excellent way to make a difference. I was a 6th grade teacher in NYC (Manhattan) for 35 years, and I am now retired.

The schools now implement a reading learning model where classrooms have leveled libraries with books grouped by genre. It is a "whole language" approach.

I preferred a basal reader... but, books now have multi-developed themes that can serve as excellent motivations for class discussions.

My favorite book was "Best Friends," by Mary Bard. It surfaces every so often at blogs where children's lit is discussed. Peter Sieruta recently mentioned it.

I sent Alchesay "Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes..." and "Shiver". I have passed on this information to my friends as well. I can't say how much I appreciate the time you took to create such a great wishlist of books.

Thanks guys! I added your contributions to the list and appreciate them so so soooo much!
